What that means in practice

The tours listed here are sold through GetYourGuide and Viator. When you follow a link from one of these pages and go on to book, the platform pays us a share of its own commission. You pay the same fare either way; the price on the booking page is the operator's price, not a marked-up one.

What we are not

We are not a tour operator. We do not run any of these tours, employ any of these guides, pilots or skippers, or hold your booking. Your contract is with the operator, through the platform.

We have no connection with the Department of Conservation, Tourism New Zealand, Fiordland & Lakes Tourism, Immigration New Zealand or any cruise, coach or helicopter operator.

How tours get listed

Operators cannot pay for placement, position or a badge. A badge on a card is a measured claim: Top rated only on a tour rated 4.9 or higher, Best seller only on the tour with the most reviews, Best value only on the cheapest. A platform's own badge is not shown. Today Best value sits on the day cruise from Manapouri, the lowest fare listed, and Top rated on the helicopter flight over Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound, rated 5.0. No tour carries Best seller: the listing with the most reviews is a Milford Sound day, not a Doubtful Sound one.

The featured tours at the top of the homepage are three different kinds of trip from two starting points: the day cruise from Manapouri, the day from Queenstown, and the overnight cruise from Manapouri.

Two pairs of listings are the same operator's day, sold on the two platforms under different names and with different details: the day from Queenstown (12 hours or 13) and the day from Te Anau (9 hours or 8 hours 30). They are never shown side by side, and each is described from its own listing.

One listing is a Milford Sound day, not a Doubtful Sound one. It is here for travellers who want to see both fiords, and its card says so first.

Prices, ratings and how current they are

Prices, star ratings and review counts belong to the operators and were taken from their own listings on 26 September 2026. They move, and the figure at checkout is the one that counts. Every fare is quoted in US dollars because that is the currency the listings were captured in; nothing is converted at an exchange rate. A listing's time-limited discount is not shown, because it ends; the fare shown is the full one. Every fare here is per person; the overnight cruise books in twos, and says so.

The facts about the fiord, its depth and length, its name, the journey in and the seasons are Visit Fiordland's. The facts about the national park and its rules are the Department of Conservation's, and the levy is Immigration New Zealand's. Where a detail comes from a listing, such as a meeting point, a group size, a weight limit or what the fare covers, it belongs to that tour.

What we deliberately do not publish

• How much bigger than Milford Sound it is. A ratio is often repeated, and by reviewers too. No official source we could find publishes it, so we give the two fiords' lengths and depths instead.
• One cruise length for every day trip. The operator's own listings give 2 hours, 2 hours 45 and 3 hours on the fiord. Each card quotes its own listing.
• The overnight boat's name. The listings and travellers name different vessels for the same cruise, so the boat is described, not named.
• An admission ticket. Some listings print an admission line. There is no entry fee to the fiord or the park, so that line is not shown.
• Kayaking as an inclusion. Travellers mention kayaks on the overnight, but the listing does not include them, so no card promises it.
• Wildlife promises. Dolphins, seals and penguins are often seen and never guaranteed.
