Doubtful Sound itself takes a whole day, so what else you do fits around it, in Te Anau and Manapouri. If you are choosing between Doubtful Sound New Zealand tours, here is what the fiord offers on board, and what the two towns add before and after.
That is the day most people come for. You spend it on the water, on the lake and on the pass, and there is little else to do out there: no town, no café and no road. Bring what you need for the day, because the boats sell food and drink by card only.
The Te Anau Glowworm Caves sit on the far shore of Lake Te Anau. RealNZ takes you across by boat, then leads a walk and a small boat ride through caves that it says are only 12,000 years old. At the end is a grotto lit by glowworms, where you stay silent.
Photography is not allowed inside. It makes a good evening before an early start at Pearl Harbour. The 3-day trip from Queenstown includes the caves on its first day, with a night in Te Anau before the fiord.
The Kepler Track is a Great Walk loop of 60 km that starts 5 km from Te Anau. You do not have to walk it all. From the car park, the first section runs 5.6 km along the lake shore to Brod Bay, about 1 hour 30 each way, DOC says.
A scheduled boat also runs to Brod Bay, so you can walk one way and ride the other. Above the bay the track climbs for 3 hours 30 to 4 hours 30 to Luxmore Hut, which needs a booking.
You cross Lake Manapouri twice on any Doubtful Sound day, from Pearl Harbour to West Arm and back. DOC warns that the lake can become rough and choppy, particularly in the afternoons.
The Waiau River runs out of the lake at Manapouri. DOC notes that it played the River Anduin in The Lord of the Rings, and the nearby Kepler Mire played the Dead Marshes. At West Arm you may have time at the information centre beside the Manapouri Power Station, though the station itself is not open for tours.
Helicopters fly from Te Anau Airport, on the road to Manapouri. The shorter flight crosses the ranges to Doubtful Sound and lands at a lookout if the weather allows. The longer one flies on to Dusky Sound, with a landing above each fiord.
Dusky Sound is where Captain Cook spent five weeks in 1773, DOC says. It has no road, so a flight is the quickest way to see it. Six seats, a 120 kg limit per passenger, and no landing unless the weather is right.
Visit Fiordland says kayak trips operate on Doubtful Sound through the summer months. No kayak tour appears among the listings here, which are cruises and flights. If you want to paddle, look for a summer operator yourself, and follow DOC's check, clean and dry rule between waterways.

With an evening, take the boat to the glowworm caves. With half a day, walk to Brod Bay and back. With a full day, cross the lake and the pass to the fiord, and with two, sleep on it.
