Pearl Harbour, where every trip starts
Every boat trip to Doubtful Sound checks in at Pearl Harbour, 64 Waiau Street, in Manapouri. Arrive 20 minutes before your departure. If you come on a coach from Te Anau or Queenstown, it brings you here.
Manapouri is a small lakeside town, the second largest in Fiordland after Te Anau. There is no hotel pickup on the day cruise from Manapouri, so you drive yourself to the wharf.
From Te Anau: 20 minutes
Manapouri is 21 km from Te Anau, about 20 minutes by car, DOC says. You can drive yourself to Pearl Harbour, or take the coach day from 85 Lakefront Drive, which adds a coach each way. That makes your day 8 hours 30 to 9 hours instead of 7.
From Queenstown: 2.5 hours each way
Visit Fiordland says to allow 2.5 hours to drive from Queenstown to Manapouri. The coach day from 88 Beach Street runs along Lake Wakatipu and back, 12 to 13 hours in all. Arrive 15 minutes before it leaves.
A night in Te Anau or Manapouri takes about five hours of road out of your day. If you can, sleep closer.
The lake crossing to West Arm
From Pearl Harbour a boat takes you across Lake Manapouri to West Arm, at its far end. DOC says the lake can become rough and choppy, particularly in the afternoons. The Manapouri Power Station is at West Arm; there are no tours of it, but you may have time at the information centre.
Over Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove
At West Arm a coach takes you over Wilmot Pass. DOC describes an alpine road that climbs to 671 m, unsealed, with lots of tight corners, about 45 minutes one way. The day trips stop on the way.
The road ends at Deep Cove, the head of the fiord, where your cruise boat waits. Deep Cove has no town: an outdoor education centre and a few fishing boats. You come back the same way.
Driving yourself: the permit and the Wednesday barge
You can take your own vehicle, but it is not simple. The road over the pass connects to no other road, so the vehicle has to cross the lake first.

Book the barge before you buy the permit, DOC says. The permit must cover every day you use the road and every day your vehicle is parked. Parking at West Arm and Deep Cove is limited, and only in marked areas. For almost everyone, a tour is the practical way in.

Visit Fiordland lists scenic flights over the fiord by plane, seaplane or helicopter, from Te Anau, Manapouri or Queenstown. The helicopter flights here leave Te Anau Airport, 42 Aviation Drive, and take 1 hour or 1 hour 30.
They carry six people, with a 120 kg limit per passenger, and land only if the weather allows. You see the fiord from above rather than from the water.
