Two answers matter more than the rest. First, there is no ticket: you pay for the journey in, and the fare covers the boat across Lake Manapouri, the coach over Wilmot Pass and the cruise. Second, there is no road, so the town you start from decides how long your day is. A day from Pearl Harbour in Manapouri takes about 7 hours, and one from Queenstown 12 to 13.
West Arm, at the far end of the lake, is where the boat meets the coach, beside the Manapouri Power Station. Deep Cove, over the pass, is where the fiord boats wait. Captain Cook sailed past the entrance in 1770 and never went in, which is how the sound got its name.
Is there an entry fee for Doubtful Sound?
No. Doubtful Sound is in Fiordland National Park, which has no gate and no entry fee. What you pay for is the journey in: the boat across Lake Manapouri, the coach over Wilmot Pass and the cruise. Most international visitors also pay New Zealand's NZ$100 visitor levy with their visa or NZeTA.
Can I drive to Doubtful Sound?
No. There is no road to Doubtful Sound: every visit crosses Lake Manapouri by boat from Pearl Harbour to West Arm, then Wilmot Pass by coach to Deep Cove. Every day trip includes all of it, whether it starts in Manapouri, Te Anau or Queenstown.
How long is a Doubtful Sound day trip?
About 7 hours from Manapouri, 8 hours 30 to 9 hours from Te Anau, and 12 to 13 hours from Queenstown. The cruise on the fiord is the same on each; the extra hours are the road.
Can I do Doubtful Sound as a day trip from Queenstown?
Yes, with the coach from 88 Beach Street, but it is a 12 to 13 hour day. Visit Fiordland says to allow 2.5 hours each way to Manapouri. A night in Te Anau shortens your day to about 8 hours 30.
Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound: which should I choose?
Doubtful Sound is 40 km long, 421 m deep and has no road, so it is quieter and the day is longer. Milford Sound is 16 km long and reached by road, with Mitre Peak and a shorter cruise. Choose Doubtful for space and silence, Milford for the famous view in a shorter day.
Can I cancel my booking?
Most day trips and flights refund in full up to 24 hours before. The overnight cruise and the 3-day trip from Queenstown are non-refundable and cannot be changed. Each card states its own policy, so check yours before you book.
What happens if it rains?
The cruises run in all weather, and rain is when the waterfalls are at their best. Doubtful Sound gets around 6 m of rain a year, so pack a waterproof whatever the forecast. When the operator cancels for weather, you are offered another date or a full refund.
Is food available on the cruise?
Yes: food and drinks are sold on the day boats, card only, and the day fares do not include lunch. Many travellers bring their own. The overnight cruise includes dinner and breakfast.
Will I see dolphins, seals or penguins?
Often, but no tour can promise it. The fiord shelters New Zealand's southernmost population of bottlenose dolphins, fur seals rest on the rocks, and tawaki, the Fiordland crested penguin, are seen there too. Visit Fiordland also lists kekeno, the New Zealand fur seal.
Where should I stay the night before?
Te Anau or Manapouri. Manapouri is 20 minutes from Te Anau, and the cruises leave from Pearl Harbour there. Queenstown works if you accept a 12 to 13 hour day.
What should I bring?
A waterproof jacket, warm layers, comfortable shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent, because the trips run in all weather and the sandflies are real. Bring lunch or a card for food on board; the boats do not take cash.
Are the tours suitable for children?
The day cruises take children with an adult, at discounted child fares. The overnight cruise books in twos for a twin cabin, and the 13-hour day from Queenstown is long for young children. The helicopter flights carry infants on a lap.
Are the cruises wheelchair accessible?
No. The cruises are not wheelchair accessible: the journey changes vehicle several times and uses a floating wharf, so you need a reasonable level of mobility. The helicopter listings say wheelchair accessible; ask the operator before you book.
How long is the cruise on the fiord itself?
About three hours on the day trips whose listings say so; some listings show 2 hours or 2 hours 45 on the fiord. The overnight spends about 20 hours there.
Do the trips run in winter?
Yes. Visit Fiordland calls winter the most settled season, often blue and cloudless, with snow to low levels. Only the weather stops the trips, and it does not happen often.
How deep is Doubtful Sound?
421 m, the deepest of New Zealand's 14 fiords (Visit Fiordland). It runs 40 km from its head to the Tasman Sea and branches into three arms.
Why is it called Doubtful Sound?
Captain Cook sailed past in 1770, doubted the ship could sail back out against the westerly, and named it Doubtful Harbour. Whalers and sealers renamed it Doubtful Sound later. Its Māori name, Patea, means place of silence.
What is Wilmot Pass?
The 671 m pass between West Arm on Lake Manapouri and Deep Cove on the fiord. Every day trip crosses it by coach twice, and the listings describe a stop on the way.
Where do the cruises leave from?
Pearl Harbour, 64 Waiau Street, Manapouri, where you check in 20 minutes before. The Te Anau coach leaves from RealNZ's visitor centre on Lakefront Drive and the Queenstown one from 88 Beach Street.
Is there hotel pickup?
Not on the RealNZ days: you meet at the visitor centre in Queenstown or Te Anau, or at Pearl Harbour. The 3-day trip may collect you from a major central Queenstown hotel if you give your address when you book.
What is the overnight cruise like?
You cross the lake and the pass, cruise the fiord with a nature guide, have dinner and sleep in a cabin at anchor, then breakfast and a morning on the water. Bookings are in twos, one overnight bag each, and the fare is non-refundable.
Can I kayak on Doubtful Sound?
Visit Fiordland says kayak trips run in the summer months. None is sold here; no kayak tour appears among these listings, only cruises and flights.
How long are the helicopter flights?
One hour over Doubtful Sound, or 1 hour 30 over Doubtful and Dusky Sound with a landing above each, from Te Anau Airport. Six seats, a 120 kg limit per passenger, and landings only if the weather allows.
Is there a weight limit?
Yes on the helicopters: 120 kg per passenger. The cruise listings give none.
Do the boats get crowded?
The day boats carry up to about 135 passengers, and some reviewers found them busy on deck. Many also describe few other boats on the fiord. The overnight takes 36.
Is there phone signal on Doubtful Sound?
Do not count on it. There is no settlement on the fiord, so plan to be offline for the day and tell anyone waiting to hear from you.
What is West Arm?
The far end of Lake Manapouri, where the boat meets the coach for Wilmot Pass. The Manapouri Power Station is there; there are no tours of it, but you may have time at the information centre.
Can I see Doubtful and Milford Sound on one tour?
No single tour here visits both. Doubtful Sound one day from Te Anau and Milford Sound the next is the usual way to see the pair.
What is the NZ$100 levy?
The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, paid with most visitor visas and NZeTAs. Travellers on Australian or New Zealand passports do not pay it.
Is Doubtful Sound a World Heritage Site?
Yes, as part of Fiordland National Park, World Heritage since 1986. The park belongs to Te Wāhipounamu, the South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.
Do I need to book ahead?
Yes in summer: the RealNZ day is flagged as likely to sell out. The overnight has only 36 places, so book it first if you want a night on the fiord.
