Doubtful and Milford Sound are Fiordland's two famous fiords, and most people can fit in only one. If you are comparing the best Doubtful Sound tour for either, here is how the two differ, how long each day is, and how to see both in two days.
The difference starts before you reach the water. Milford Sound is the only one of New Zealand's 14 fiords you can drive to, DOC says: 120 km of SH94 from Te Anau, about 2 hours without stops. You park, walk to the terminal and board.
Doubtful Sound has no road at all. You check in at Pearl Harbour in Manapouri, cross Lake Manapouri by boat to West Arm, and ride a coach over Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove. Only then does the cruise start. That journey is why the day is longer, and why the fiord is quieter.

Doubtful Sound is more than twice as long and much deeper: 421 m, the deepest of the country's fiords. Milford Sound is shorter, with Mitre Peak rising 1,692 m straight from the water. The two figures that matter most for planning are the road and the hours.
Day cruises from Manapouri, Te Anau and Queenstown, the overnight and the flights: compare them side by side.
What you get: a fiord Visit Fiordland calls larger, yet less visited. It branches into three arms, and on the Manapouri day cruise the boat stops its engines for a moment of silence.
What it costs you: time. The day is 7 hours from Manapouri, 8 hours 30 to 9 hours from Te Anau and 12 to 13 from Queenstown. The lake and the pass are part of it, not a wait.
What you get: Mitre Peak, the view most people picture, reached by road or by a scenic flight. The drive itself is part of the day, through the Homer Tunnel.
What it costs you: company. Milford Sound is the busier fiord, with a terminal and a car park, and the Queenstown day is long by road as well.
Te Anau is the base for both. It puts you 20 minutes from Manapouri and about 2 hours from Milford Sound, so neither day starts before dawn. The full plan, with a spare day for weather, is in our Doubtful Sound itinerary.
You cannot see both fiords in one trip from the listings here. The Doubtful Sound days all cross Lake Manapouri and Wilmot Pass; the one Milford listing is a small-group coach day from Queenstown with a two-hour cruise and stops on the road.
If you are based in Queenstown, the honest choice is one long day for one fiord. If you can sleep two nights in Te Anau, you can have both and keep the days shorter.
