Getting there: the lake and the pass

The overnight starts the way every trip onto the fiord does. You check in at Pearl Harbour in Manapouri and take the boat across Lake Manapouri to West Arm, where the Manapouri Power Station stands at the end of the lake. A coach then climbs Wilmot Pass, 671 m, through the rainforest and drops to Deep Cove, where the overnight boat is waiting. If you are not staying nearby, you can add a connecting coach from Queenstown or Te Anau when you book.

Afternoon, dinner and the dark

Doubtful Sound is 40 km long, 421 m deep and branches into three arms, and a night on it gives you time for all of it. You spend the afternoon cruising the fiord with the nature guide, looking for bottlenose dolphins, kekeno on the rocks and tawaki, then the boat drops anchor in a sheltered mooring for the night. Pack a swimsuit for the mooring: it is on the list of things to bring.

Dinner is three courses, served on board. After that the day boats have long gone home and there is no settlement on the fiord, so the evening is yours, the crew's and the other guests'. Reviewers remember the sunset, the quiet, and the dark when it comes. Early Māori called this place Patea, the place of silence, and at anchor you find out why.

Breakfast and the way out

You wake up on the water. Breakfast is served on board, and then the boat cruises back along the fiord to Deep Cove, which gives you a second look at the walls in morning light. The same coach takes you back over the pass to West Arm, and the lake boat returns you to the visitor centre in Manapouri where you started.

Cabins, bags and bookings of two

You sleep in a cabin with shared bathrooms. The fare is per person, sold as a twin room for two, so each booking holds a maximum of two people. If you are three, you book one twin and one single; for two twin rooms, make two bookings. Space on board is tight, so you may bring only one overnight bag each. Tell the operator about dietary needs when you book.

One reviewer found the cabin basic and the shower cold and suggests earplugs. Another couple needed sunhats rather than raincoats, and a third was grateful for the rain and its waterfalls. It is a boat in the wilderness, not a hotel, and the reviews are clear about that.

What's included

Checking in at Manapouri

You check in at RealNZ's Doubtful Sound Cruises office, 64 Waiau Street, Pearl Harbour, Manapouri, 20 minutes before your departure. The trip ends back there the next day.

There is no hotel pickup in this fare. Manapouri is 20 minutes' drive from Te Anau, so most guests stay in either town the night before and drive over. The connecting coach from Queenstown or Te Anau is an option you choose when you book. The route is on the Doubtful Sound map, and the drive and the parking are in getting to Doubtful Sound.

Know before you go

• Book only when your dates are fixed. The fare is non-refundable and cannot be changed.
• Book in twos. A twin room holds two; three guests need a twin and a single.
• Pack one bag each. Only one overnight bag per person is allowed on board.
• Pack a swimsuit and warm layers. Both are on the what-to-bring list, with a waterproof.
• Give dietary needs at booking. The kitchen plans dinner and breakfast in advance.
