From there it is the same way in as every day on the fiord: a boat across the lake, a coach over the pass, then a three-hour cruise before the whole route runs home again. The road to Manapouri
Doubtful Sound has no road of its own, and Manapouri, where every boat leaves from, is a long way from Queenstown. Visit Fiordland puts the drive at about 2.5 hours each way. On this day it is a coach: along the shore of Lake Wakatipu, then across farmland to Manapouri, with your driver talking you through the country as you go. Allow about 2 hours 20 minutes on the coach out and 2 hours 15 back.
That is the price of basing yourself in Queenstown. Around four and a half of your thirteen hours are on the coach. The upside is that you can sleep, read or watch the view, and nobody in your party has to drive 2.5 hours home after a long day outdoors.
Lake, pass and three hours on the fiord
At Pearl Harbour you change to the lake boat for about an hour across Lake Manapouri to West Arm, where the Manapouri Power Station sits at the end of the lake. A coach then takes you up and over Wilmot Pass, 671 m, through dense rainforest, and down to Deep Cove at the head of the fiord. Allow about an hour each way for the pass.
At Deep Cove you board the Patea Explorer for three hours on Doubtful Sound, 40 km long and 421 m deep, with three arms off the main channel. The nature guides explain what you see: the waterfalls, the forest on the walls, and the wildlife, which can include bottlenose dolphins, kekeno and tawaki. You also get a spell simply floating on the fiord, with only waterfalls and birdsong to break the silence.
Rain does not stop the cruise, and when it rains in Fiordland the walls run with waterfalls. Bring your own lunch or buy drinks and snacks in the cafe on board, which takes cards only.

Finding the right building on Beach Street
You meet at the RealNZ Visitor Centre, 88 Beach Street, Queenstown, 15 minutes before departure, and the day ends back there. Kelly, a New Zealand reviewer, found two of the operator's buildings close together on the waterfront, so check the street number before you queue.
There is no hotel pickup, so make your own way to Beach Street. The coach route, Manapouri and the fiord are all on the Doubtful Sound map, and the way in from Pearl Harbour is set out in getting to Doubtful Sound.
Know before you go
- Pack lunch and snacks. It is a 13-hour day, and the cafe on board sells only snacks and drinks.
- Bring a card. The boats are cashless; bar drinks are not in the fare.
- Dress for cool, wet weather. Rain gear and warm layers, even in summer.
- Bring insect repellent. It is on the packing list, and the sandflies are why.
- Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. You will want both on a clear day on the water.
- Check the access. The day is not suitable for wheelchair users.
