The case for the boat

On the boat you are in the fiord, not above it. You cross Lake Manapouri, ride over the pass, and spend 2 to 3 hours on the water with a nature guide. You hear the waterfalls when the engines stop, and you have the best chance of dolphins, seals and penguins, which no one sees from a helicopter. And it costs a fraction of the flight.

The price is time. From Manapouri the day is 7 hours; from Te Anau, 8 hours 30 to 9; from Queenstown, 12 to 13. The boat takes up to 135 people, so you share the deck. But it runs in all weather, and rain is when the walls pour with waterfalls. For most visitors the boat is the right choice, and the day cruise from Manapouri is the shortest way to do it.

The case for the helicopter

A helicopter from Te Anau Airport shows you in an hour what the boat takes a day to reach. The one-hour flight crosses Lake Manapouri and the ranges, gives you about 40 minutes over the park and the fiord, and lands at a lookout if the weather allows. The 90-minute flight lands above Doubtful Sound and again above Dusky Sound, where Captain Cook spent five weeks in 1773, and comes back over the Kepler Mountains.

You see the fiord's whole shape, its arms and the lakes above it, which no boat can show you. There are at most 6 seats, and the flights are marked wheelchair accessible. One reviewer saw alpine lakes and waterfalls from the air that the boat never reaches. Another found the turbulence made it hard to take in.

What each one shows you

The boat shows you the fiord at water level: the walls rising above you, the waterfalls close enough to hear, the tea-coloured fresh water on the surface, and the animals, if they come. On a wet day it shows you more waterfalls than you can count. What it cannot show is the shape of the place, the way the arms wind between the ranges and the lakes sit above them.

The helicopter shows you exactly that. From the air the fiord is a map, with Lake Manapouri behind you and the Tasman Sea ahead, and a landing on a ridge gives you a view no road or boat reaches. The price is distance: you see no animal close up, and you hear the rotors, not the waterfalls.

There is also a third way to think about the choice. If time on the water is what you want, neither a day boat nor a flight gives you as much as a night at anchor. The weather decides more than you think

Doubtful Sound gets around 6 m of rain a year. A boat cruises in rain and low cloud; a helicopter lands only if the weather permits. Mie, a reviewer on the longer flight, had the flight moved a day earlier to dodge a front and flew in sun. That is the pattern to plan for: book the flight early in your stay, so there is room to move it. Winter is the most settled season. Doing both

Both start within a few minutes of each other: the jetty is in Manapouri, and the helicopters fly from Te Anau Airport, whose address is in Manapouri too. So you can do both from one base in two days. Fly on your first clear morning, then take the boat the next day in whatever weather comes. Or take the boat first, and fly only if the sky clears. Flights are arranged every day between 9am and 5pm, so you confirm the time with the pilot.
